If your solar panels are not producing enough power in the Bay Area, the cause may be relatively simple—such as a monitoring connection problem—or it may require professional diagnostics. Seasonal weather, shading, debris, electrical faults, inverter issues and changes in household consumption can all affect what you see.
Here are nine warning signs worth investigating.
1.- Production Is Significantly Lower Than the Same Period Last Year
Solar production naturally changes from day to day and season to season. A cloudy week in January should not be compared with a sunny week in June. The more useful comparison is the same month—or a similar weather period—from one year to the next.
If production is consistently lower, possible causes include:
New shading from tree growth or nearby construction
Inverter or microinverter problems
A disconnected circuit or tripped breaker
Equipment degradation or component failure
Heavy soiling, debris or animal activity
One unusual day is rarely conclusive. A repeated pattern is more meaningful.
2.- Your Monitoring App Shows an Error—or Has Stopped Reporting
If the monitoring platform shows no production, do not immediately assume the panels have stopped working. Sometimes the solar system continues producing electricity while the monitoring connection has gone offline because of a Wi-Fi change, failed communications device, replaced router or loss of internet connectivity.
However, repeated alerts, persistent error codes or missing production data should not be ignored. Record the error message and the time it appeared. That information can make professional troubleshooting faster and more efficient.
3.- One Panel—or Section—Consistently Produces Less
Homeowners with panel-level monitoring may notice that one module, one roof plane or one group of panels repeatedly trails the rest of the system. Some variation is normal depending on roof orientation and shade.
A consistent and unexplained gap, however, may point to:
Localized shading
A failed optimizer or microinverter

A healthy solar-production graph normally rises after sunrise, peaks around the middle of the day and falls toward sunset. Repeated unexplained dropouts in the middle of clear days may justify investigation.
Potential causes include inverter faults, loose connections, overheating, grid-voltage conditions or protective shutdowns. Occasional dips caused by passing clouds are normal; complete gaps during otherwise sunny periods are not.
7.- New Shade Has Appeared Since Installation
Solar designs are based on the site conditions present when the system is evaluated. Trees grow. New buildings alter the sun path. Roof equipment may be added. Bay Area properties often have mature trees and relatively compact lots, so gradual shading can be easy to miss from the ground.
